Quick answers for setup, captions, and learner-chosen lookup sites.
Use an Apple M1 or later Mac running macOS 26.0 or later. Initial Setup walks through your Caption Language, capture method, permission requests, and local speech model. Then use Source, Segmentation & Lookup, and Start in the main window. Completing instructions does not mean access was granted.
Open Settings → Troubleshooting, or use the question-mark help button when it appears. Check PhraseLens under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording → System Audio Recording Only. Select the intended app and play audio. Silence alone does not prove access was denied; protected content may prevent capture.
Check Microphone and Speech Recognition permissions, then confirm that the selected input is receiving audio.
Confirm the recognition language matches the content, the speech model is downloaded, and the source audio is clear.
Try Reload or Open in System Browser. Third-party sites can change; you can select another current site in PhraseLens.
Open Settings → Lookup. Try Add Search Link first when the result URL contains your sample phrase. Use Record Search when the URL does not contain it or does not change after searching.
Choose Record Search and enter a public HTTPS page that works without signing in. Select its search field; PhraseLens fills an example query. Submit the search as usual, check the displayed result, then choose Add Site to save it.
Record Search does not support searches that require login or CAPTCHA, and does not record passwords or CAPTCHA interactions or bypass access restrictions. Choose another public search site, or use Add Search Link when a suitable result URL is available. If a saved search stops working after a site changes, record it again. Signing in later in Browser Lookup does not make a login-dependent recording supported.
Check Browser Pause Control in Troubleshooting and allow PhraseLens under macOS Accessibility. Restart only when the app asks. Space shortcuts run automatically for recognized browsers and require a compatible player. PhraseLens cannot read playback state; an already-paused video may start playing.
